His writing is particularly concerned with Irish governance, the operation of public institutions, and the ways individuals and organisations respond to complexity and change.
Earlier in his career he became known for writing about walking, travel and place, including the book Best Walks in Ireland. While that work remains an important part of his archive, his current focus is centred on governance, public life and essayistic inquiry.
He is based in Ireland.
